Mixes with added grit / perlite

Many of our customers find themselves dealing with heavy clay soil.  We can add grit, or lightweight perlite, to any of our growing media.  When the media is dug through the bed or border the grit / perlite will aid drainage.

    A 50:50 mix of our premium sandy loam topsoil, mushroom compost and lightweight perlite. The sandy loam is the free draining body of the mix, the mushroom compost adds vital nutrients and the perlite is a lightweight alternative to grit, aiding drainage to prevent waterlogging.

    In addition the lightweight perlite allows water and air to penetrate, enabling the roots to establish deep into the soil.

    We source our manure from local stables and it will be either shavings or straw based. Whilst this is a natural product and therefore consistency will vary, we endeavour to ensure that all manure delivered to our customers is well rotted. Please be aware that it may still retain some heat so we recommend that you put the growing media down a few weeks before planting. If using as a mulch be careful not to allow the manure / mix to touch the stalks of the plant.  If you would like a mix that is nutrient rich and can be planted into immediately we recommend our TS1 / Peat Free Planting Compost mixes.

    If using as a mulch be careful not to allow the manure / mix to touch the stalks of the plant. If you would like a mix that is nutrient rich and can be planted into immediately we recommend our TS1 / Peat Free Planting Compost mixes.

    We mix our mushroom compost with 6mm grit. The mushroom compost adds vital nutrients whilst the clean grit helps to cut through heavy soils to aid drainage and prevent waterlogging.

    Please note that due to the addition of lime during the mushroom growing process we do not recommend this product for use with ericaceous (acid loving) plants.
