Professional Growing Media

Alpine Mix

Alpine plants need a free draining growing environment to cope with the sudden influx of water created by melting snow in the Spring.

We add bark to peat to create a free draining media, and add a control release fertiliser for longer term nutrition as well as a base fertiliser to give an initial nutrient boost at the point of planting.

Available as 40-litre bag, Loose load or Bulk bag (~1 m³) (£108.00 retail).

Blueberry Mix

Blueberries prefer a more acidic growing media. We have developed this ericaceous compost specifically for Blueberries. We blend fine and coarse peat with pine bark to create a low pH, free draining growing media. Finally we add a control release fertiliser (which is important where fertigation is not available) as well as a base fertiliser to give an initial nutrient boost.

Blueberries like to be kept in damp (but not soaking wet) compost that is not allowed to dry out. Where you can, water with rainwater as tap water will raise the pH level.

Available as 40-litre bag or Bulk bag (~1 m³) (£120.00 retail).

Ericaceous Shrub Mix

There are a few shrubs which prefer a more acidic growing media (eg Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camellias etc).

We mix fine and coarse acidic peat with chipped pine bark and a base fertiliser to provide an nutrient rich ericaceous growing media in which your acid loving shrubs will thrive.

Available as 40-litre bag or Bulk bag (~1 m³) (£108.00 retail).

Extensive Roofsoil

This lightweight growing media is most commonly uses for sedum planting on extensive green roofs. Once planted very little maintenance is required.

We blend this mix to order using clean crushed reject brick and PAS100 certified green waste compost. The crushed brick will reduce the weight of the growing media whilst also helping with water regulation, absorbing and releasing as required.

Available as 25-litre bag or Bulk bag (~1 m³) (£122.00 retail).

Geranium Mix

We combine fine peat, for efficient water management and nutrient retention, with control release fertiliser. Geraniums benefit from a pH of around 6.5, nut no lower than 5.5.  Peat is naturally acidic so we add an element of magnesium lime to create the optimum pH for Geranium growth.

Best planted in areas where they will be exposed to at least 6 – 8 hours of sunlight per day. Geraniums favour moist, free draining soil. It is also best to mulch the plants to help retain water throughout the growing season.

Available as 40-litre bag, Loose load or Bulk bag (~0.85 m³) (£114.00 retail).

Intensive Roofsoil

Our Intensive roofsoil has been developed to enable customers to recreate a conventional garden space on the roof. As with any planted garden these green spaces will require regular maintenance, irrigation and management.

We blend premium, British Standard certified sandy loam topsoil with lightweight expanded clay aggregate to create a free draining but relatively lightweight growing media.

Available as Bulk bag (~1 m³) (£111.00 retail).

Perennial & Herbaceous Mix

Perennial and Herbaceous plants that are overwintered outdoors require good drainage. To achieve this we mix a blend of fine and coarse peat with pine bark.

Mixed in is a control release fertiliser for season long nutrition, as well as a base fertiliser to provide an initial nutrient boost.

Available as Bulk bag (~1 m³) (£110.40 retail).

Pot/Bedding Compost - Potting-on Mix

This is a fine peat based compost which contains essential nutrients and a wetting agent to help tray bedding and pot plants retain water and supply them with essential nutrients.  The wetting agent can reduce watering needs by up to 25% without affecting the growth of the plant.

This mix is for the re-potting of larger plants where water retention and a good long term growing environment is needed.

Available as Bulk bag (~0.85 m³) (£114.00 retail).

Pot/Bedding Compost - Seedling Mix

This is a fine peat based compost which contains essential nutrients and a wetting agent to help tray bedding and pot plants retain water and supply them with essential nutrients.  The wetting agent can reduce watering needs by up to 25% without affecting the growth of the plant.

This mix has been developed for first planting and contains the essential nutrients required to support the growth of young plants.

Available as Bulk bag (~0.85 m³) (£114.00 retail).

Rose Mix

Roses are relatively easy to grow successfully as long as they receive sufficient direct sunlight and are planted in well drained and fertile soil. This is a blend of fine and coarse peat, with clay loam and grit.

We also add an element of lime to ensure that the growing media is at the best growing pH for roses which is between 5.5 – 6.

Available as Bulk bag (~0.85 m³) (£93.60 retail).

Shrub Mix

We mix peat with a small percentage of clay loam and a control release fertiliser to provide the perfect growing medium for most shrubs, be they border or container based (NB for acid loving shrubs see our Ericaceous Shrub Mix).

Once established shrubs need relatively little watering, however they will benefit from being mulched as this will help with water retention, weed suppression and in boosting nutrient levels. Mulching is normally done in late winter after application of a general purpose fertiliser, although shrubs can be mulched any time from late Spring to early Autumn providing that the soil is damp.

Available as Bulk bag (~0.85 m³) (£108.00 retail).

Soft Fruit Mix

Soft fruit plants are relatively easy to grow. They require sun, shelter and free draining fertile soil.

We blend both fine and coarse peat with pine bark, as well as mixing in a control release fertiliser that will last the growing season. Finally a base fertiliser is added to provide that initial nutrient boost. Plants must still be watered regularly after initial planting and during dry periods, and may benefit from further feeding during the season with something like tomato feed.

NB This mix will suit most soft fruits apart from Blueberries who require a more acid growing media. See our Blueberry Mix.

Available as 40-litre bag or Bulk bag (~0.85 m³) (£112.80 retail).

Succulent Mix

Succulents thrive in dry, arid growing conditions. Therefore they require a free draining potting soil. We use sandy loam, grit and a lightweight expanded clay aggregate to achieve the optimum growing environment.

To this mix we also add a control release fertiliser that provides months of nutrition, and a systemic insecticide which targets major soil and foliar pests. This is particularly appropriate for container grown plants.

The standard mix is suitable for seedlings and young plants, as well as more established succulents.

Available as Bulk bag (~0.85 m³) (£120.00 retail).

Tree Mix

This is a standard peat based composition, with added bark to optimise the rooting environment, promoting long term tree health.

We have added a control release fertiliser that will reduce the need for liquid feeding, and a small amount of lime to ensure that the pH is at the optimum needed for most trees, between pH 5.5 – 6.

Available as Bulk bag (~0.85 m³) (£108.00 retail).
